All set for Aug 17 General election
All necessary arrangements have been made to conduct free and fair General elections on 17th this month. There are 12,314 polling stations in the 22 administrative districts while the total number of registered voters for this General Election is 15,044,490. 125,000 officials will be deployed for election duty on the day of the election. Ballot boxes will be delivered to the voting centers on the 13th. According to the Department of Elections more than 70000 officers will be engaged in counting of votes.
Postal voting for the General Election was held recently while 566, 823 people were eligible for voting.
Campaigning for the Parliamentary election 2015 will end at midnight today. Election offices set up by the candidates at the electoral level should be dismantled by tomorrow.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that a candidate is permitted to maintain only one District office. The Elections Chief emphasized that action would be taken to apprehend individuals who moot campaigning breaching elections regulations.
The Elections Chief said that all political party Secretaries have already been informed of removing banners, cutouts and posters that are on display at the offices of all candidates who are in the fray.
The Elections Chief stated that the Police would take action to remove all propaganda material that has not been taken away from the offices by 8 am on Saturday.
